What it’s like to take Frontline – quotes from library staff who have finished the course

If you are trying to find out about the Frontline online course, or are thinking of taking it yourself, you can scroll down to read the views of people who have actually finished the course. The views expressed here are those of the individuals themselves who wish to contribute them, and not of their employer, nor of Opening the Book.

I enjoyed this course. It helps to educate library staff on doing effective book promotions- what works, what doesn't work. It also helps you to confidently recommend books to borrowers that you may never read yourself.

I enjoyed this course a lot, I found that it helped me think outside the box when it comes to why people borrow. I really enjoyed putting up the display and had a great feeling when someone took the time to check it out and borrow something from it.. Unfortunately I did find that the questions asked in the learning log were somewhat repetivie at times and felt that my answer didn't make interesting reading for my supervisor because I was answering them with the same information a little differently. But all in all, I am really glad I took part in the course and I look foward to any future course of the same nature.

I found this a very interesting and user friendly course. It was nice that on several subjects it confirmed that certain things we were routinely doing in my library was good working practice. It was also very helpful in that it pointed out several areas where we could improve our practices. This was especially the case with regard to which books to mix and match in a display and what to avoid and with regard to the special subject display.

I found Frontline a very positive experience, although time consuming. I recieved great help from my colleagues and assistance to allow me have the time to complete the 7 modules. I have implemented some of the ideas learned in Frontline in our Library, and the displays etc. are proving to be a great success.

There were some good tips on alternative methods of display- learned a lot also from seeing what others do. Worthwhile course

Frontline gave me the oppportunity and the knowledge to make the library experience a more pleasurable one for borrowers.

I have found Frontline very interesting and informative on how best to help the public and make the most use of the library facility, which is what we're all about. It made me think, and made me have to speak to customers about their choice of books, which I found challenging! All in all a good course, I would recommend it to my colleagues.

Thoroughly enjoyed the course. Will be going back now that it's all over to print off some of those great ideas from course and discussion boards! It definitely makes you think about things differently (and more intelligently!)

I really enjoyed doing this course. It was a fresh look and suggestions for new approaches to what we frontline staff do on a daily basis. It made me think about reading habits and how to encourage and try different things in my displays. It also helped me to stop and think outside the box when limited by library space/furniture. I hope to continue with a few things i have done on this course.. keeping track of reader recommendations and doing online reviews on both fiction and non fiction reads. Reader interviews were something I found difficult, which was surprising to me. I talk to most borrowers about reading at different times, as most would comment on maybe a book they read or a book they are reserving, but when I had a few different questions to ask I found it difficult to do. Overall it has been a very enjoyable course to do. Many thanks.

I found the course really worthwhile, it highlights what we all do on a daily basis, sometimes without even knowing it. I found that I have alot more confidence arranging the displays, and getting customer feedback. One of the tasks that I found really interesting was the treat, challange, bargepole excercise!! Would really recommend anyone thinking about doing this course to jump right in and do it!

I enjoyed the course. It made me look at my work place from the borrowers point of view and helped me be more imaginative with displays and stock. i hope to put some of my new ideas into practise, the one caviat I have is that it takes time. Working in a library is so multitasked that I need to make a priority of displays and possibly bookmark reader recommendations/remarks.

The course is a must for those who wish to promote existing stock and increase issues - especially in these financially straightened times.

I thoroughly enjoyed doing this course. The content is so relevant and practical compared to other library courses. Throughout the course the library I work in has benifited immencely from the ideas and project work in each module. The structure and layout of the course is very well planned and it also very easy to follow. I will continue to use the promotional ideas that this course has taught.

thought it was a very worthwhile course, a bit difficult to fit it in at times in a busy library but has definitley changed the way I would approach displays.

I have really enjoyed the course, when I got time to work on it. It is extrememly practical and down to earth. I am sorry it took me so long to complete it as I got side tracked by other work committments along the way. Glad I did it!
Castletymon, 15/06/2010

It was welll worth doing. It highlights a lot of key areas in reader centered work that we already know yet I have learned loads along the way. Never forget that Library users like to be asked their opinions and they should be taken on board.

I have really enjoyed doing this course, it's been a very practical excercise and I have gathered quite a bit of information while doing it.

I would strongly recommend this course to librarians, I have really enjoyed Frontline, and have learned so much, regarding the Librarian and Borrowers relationship, Book promotions, displays etc. This course is only the beginning for me, as today is the start of putting all I've learned into practice and will continue .... Thanks for the knowledge. Regards to all Deirdre

You need a lot of time to do this course.

Really interesting course that has given me lots of new ideas and techniques for recommending, promoting and displaying stock within the Library. The course has boosted my confidence about promoting books to readers and also for displaying stock.
Central Library, 21/04/2010

It has to be said i was within two minds about doing this course, wasnt sure what the content was like, if it would be interesting, but i found some modules very worthwhile and will continue them in my branch, "Book of the Day" "Display of Books" the opinions of borrowers/ type of borrowers!! Also it was a good learning experience, that not all borrowers are the same and once you know this it is alot easier to find and discuss books with them, they are always eager to help or assist in making the library an easier place to visit!

A big thanks to Marie, with out her I would not have finished it.
Malahide Library, 11/03/2010

I would recommend this course to anyone - it really opens your eyes as to how simple it can be to increase the issues in your library but it will also provide a wealth of information and ideas from around Ireland and the UK from other people which you can put to use too.
Tallaght Library, 26/02/2010

I felt the course was very worthwhile and offered an insight into attracting readers. It was also presented in a clear format that made it easy to work with. As it is based on real life tasks, it made it interesting to implement the suggestions in the modules.
Limerick City Library, 24/02/2010

I found the course very helpful in that it taught me to think beyond what I liked when recommending books to my borrowers and I found doing the main display helped to tempt people out of their comfort zone and to try something which they might never have read.
